How Your Next Movie works

The quiz places you on six taste dimensions: mood (serious to playful), pace (slow burn to propulsive), era (classic to contemporary), genre mix (grounded to fantastical), darkness (sunlit to pitch black), heart (cerebral to big-hearted). That’s your FilmPrint. Every film in our catalog has a position on the same six dimensions, and your picks are the films closest to you.

Favorites, the optional deeper round and your swipes all move your FilmPrint a little, so your picks get sharper the more you tell us. Your FilmPrint is calculated in your browser.

The films

The catalog has 1,617 feature films from 1920 to 2025, chosen from Wikidata for how widely they’re covered across Wikipedia’s languages, balanced across decades and genres.

Every taste score is an estimate. The scores for 1,577 films were estimated by an AI model working from a fixed written rubric, and the remaining 40 were scored by hand. They describe what a film is like to watch, not how good it is. They’re not critic scores or audience ratings, and they’ll sometimes be wrong. Match percentages are calculated from these estimates.

Posters

Poster images are provided by TMDB and loaded directly from TMDB’s image servers; we don’t store or re-host them. Films without a poster get a designed title card. Poster information was last updated from TMDB on October 3, 2026. Posters are only for display and never affect your FilmPrint, your matches or the order of your picks.
